Snowflake Method

From Idea to Plot Structure

The Snowflake Method is a popular method for developing a story from the initial idea to the basic plot structure. This software offers this method as an optional tool to guide you through this process.

The software takes you step by step through the method. Each step features a small arrow where you can find associated instructions.

The individual work steps are as follows:

  1. Core Sentence: Develop the core of your story in a single sentence. This sentence serves as a common thread throughout the planning process, guiding the development of your plot.

  2. Five Sentences: Identify the key turning points of your story. Start with the triggering event where the story begins to unfold, followed by crucial turning points or disasters, each being a logical consequence of the events of the story. These turning points collectively form a brief summary of your plot.

  3. Setting: Define the setting of your story, which consists of four elements:
The era and time period in which your story takes place.
    The duration your story covers.
The physical locations, such as a town, building, or country.
The conflict level, ranging from internal conflicts to societal or environmental conflicts.

  4. Short Summary: Summarize the events of your story in a concise text, starting from the five sentences identified in step 2. This process may highlight inconsistencies in your plot, allowing you to refine your ideas.

  5. Main Characters: Create and detail your main characters. After defining them, click on each character to describe their motives and goals, how they develop through the story, and what they learn. Also, write a short text from the perspective of each character, describing the events of your story.

  6. Long Summary: Expand your short summary into a more detailed narrative, describing the turning points in depth. If new turning points emerge during this process, revisit step 2 and adjust until all parts of your story fit together seamlessly.

  7. Develop Characters: Focus on all your characters, working out their biographies, appearances, and the relationships between them. Utilize the tools under 'Characters' to explore different aspects of their personalities and backgrounds.

  8. Plotting: Begin working on the plot structure. Choose a plot structure that fits your story, develop further building blocks, and create your scenes, ensuring each element aligns with the overall story you're crafting.
