Guide:

Character Design Step by Step

Character design is crucial in story development, as the story and characters are intertwined. A good plot alone doesn't make a compelling story without well-crafted characters. StoryIt Go provides a dedicated area for character design, equipped with several tools. The following step-by-step guide is recommended, but feel free to use the character development tools in any order or at any time that suits you.

  1. Get to Know Your Characters with the Character Chat
    The Character Chat helps you understand your characters better. As an author, it's essential to know more about your characters than what is revealed to the reader.

  2. Explore the Characterization of Your Characters
    The characterization tool is based on Eric Berne's Transactional Analysis. It aims to identify coherent character traits, which are displayed during plotting. These characteristics should help you depict the character's reactions realistically. Follow the wizard to explore your character's personality. Refer back to these results if you're uncertain how your character should react in the plot.

Integrating Characters into Your Existing Story

If you already have a story, use the following method to find a character that fits:

  • Step 1: Identify the central theme, e.g., Love.
  • Step 2: Find the opposite, e.g., Hate.
  • Step 3: Determine the value between these opposites, e.g., Indifference.
  • Step 4: Consider what is worse than the opposite or how the theme turns against itself, e.g., Self-hatred.

This creates a chain like: Love -> Indifference -> Hate -> Self-hatred. Design your characters to cover these aspects, thereby taking your story to the extreme. For instance, design a character, possibly your protagonist, who initially lives in self-loathing.

Further Examples:

  • Life -> Waste Away -> Death -> Damnation
  • Talking to Each Other -> Alienation -> Isolation -> Madness
  • Success -> Complacency -> Failure -> Betrayal
  • Justice -> Lack of Character -> Injustice -> Tyranny
